Towing a Trailer: The Law

The law on towing a trailer depends on when you gained your car driving licence (category B)

Licences issued after 1st January 1997

If you passed your car diving test after 1st January 1997, you can drive a car or van weighing up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) with a trailer up to 750kg MAM.

(You can tow a trailer above 750kg if the combined MAM of the vehicle and trailer is under 3,500kg.)

Licences issued before 1st January 1997

If you passed your car driving test before 1st January 1997, you can drive a car or van with trailer with a combined weight up to 8,250kg MAM.

Exceptions can apply so it’s best to check your driving licence before towing a trailer. Typically, if your want to tow a heavier trailer, you will need to pass the category B+E driving test.
