Who is the category B+E licence training for?
This cat B+E training course is ideal for any driver who needs to tow a trailer up to 3,500kg.
Any person with a valid driving licence and is 17 years of age or older can take this course.
Towing a Trailer: The Law
The law on towing a trailer depends on when you gained your car driving licence (category B)
Licences issued after 1st January 1997
If you passed your car diving test after 1st January 1997, you can drive a car or van weighing up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) with a trailer up to 750kg MAM.
(You can tow a trailer above 750kg if the combined MAM of the vehicle and trailer is under 3,500kg.)
Licences issued before 1st January 1997
If you passed your car driving test before 1st January 1997, you can drive a car or van with trailer with a combined weight up to 8,250kg MAM.
Exceptions can apply so it’s best to check your driving licence before towing a trailer. Typically, if your want to tow a heavier trailer, you will need to pass the category B+E driving test.

What can I tow with a B+E Licence?
If you passed your car (B) driving test before 1st January 1997, you are usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM. If you passed your car (B) driving test on or after 1st January 1997, you can drive a car up to 3,500kg MAM with a trailer up to 750kg MAM or tow a trailer over 750kg MAM if the combined MAM of the car (B) and trailer (E) does not exceed 3,500kg.
